Activity Notes

From the parking lot, we will turn left from the parking lot and start hiking west up the Augspurger Trail, #4407. The trail climbs at a steady pace over 2.8 miles to an elevation of about 2,200 feet, eventually reaching a junction with trail #4407A. We will take a right turn and head south on Trail #4407A. This portion of the trail is also the exposed side of Dog Mountain, so, depending on the weather, we may see some snow or ice (so have your traction devices accessible in your bag) and may need to add layers.

 

After approximately a mile, we will wind up at the Dog Mountain summit. It will likely be dark, but we will likely take a break here for some breakfast and breathers. We will then descend from the summit via Dog Mountain Trail #147, opting for the “Scenic Trail” at the junction to save people’s knees. About 0.5 miles from the top, we will reach Puppy Dog Lookout, the site of a former lookout tower. We should be able to see the lights of Hood River, possibly with first light, from here. We will continue down the trail, and after an additional 2.6 miles (so 3.1 miles from the top), we will be back to the parking lot. The group will then have the option of second breakfast together in Stevenson.
