Activity Notes

This is a provisional hike lead for Michele Barnett’s application to become a Mazamas Hike Leader.

All are welcome on this hike. We will meet for carpooling at the MMC departing at 7:30am. We plan to start hiking at 8:30am, ascend at a moderate yet steady pace, and allow plenty of time for taking spectacular photos of wildflowers and gorge views at the top. The plan is to go up the less steep side of the loop which offers better views and to return via the Augspurger Trail which adds a mile but is easier on the knees. Total for the day is about 7.2 miles roundtrip with about 3,000’ of elevation gain.

It’s peak wildflower season on Dog Mountain, and a special car/hiking permit is currently required on weekends. The hike leader has 1 permit and will accept 5 total hikers (including the leader) to carpool together to the trailhead. Additional prospective hikers will be placed on a waitlist, as we will attempt to obtain a 2nd permit for one more carpool full of hikers. If we obtain the additional permit, then the additional hikers will be taken from the waitlist 2-3 days prior to the hike date.

Please carry a backpack with non-cotton layered clothing, a windbreaker/rain jacket, water (suggest 1.5 - 2 liters), sun protection, snacks, lunch. Hiking poles are recommended. The hike will proceed rain or shine. Please feel free to contact the provisional hike leader  michele.barnett@gmail.com with any questions.
