Activity Notes

Join us for a night hike during peak of the Leonids meteor shower. Bring your headlamp and hope for clear skies! We'll hike to the top of Dog Mountain in the gorge.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Staying warm and well-lit at night in winter conditions
  • Optimism to motivate your teammates and keep them safe
  • Fitness to walk with only cursory breaks, ~800' / hour

Leonids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Tempel–Tuttle, known for spectacular meteor storms that occur about every 33 years. The Leonids get their name from the location of their radiant in the constellation Leo: the meteors appear to radiate from that point in the sky.

As a night hike, is a fair-weather only event, and only 'on' if partially clear breaks are expected. Must bring a headlamp with red option, and extra batteries, in addition to 10 essentials.
