Activity Notes
Overview: Late-season ascent of Mount St. Helens via Monitor Ridge starting from Climbers Bivouac (~10 miles round-trip, ~4,500 ft elevation gain). Expect sustained steep boulder scrambling, loose ash/pumice slopes, and potentially cold, windy conditions at the crater rim. Most likely this will be to the crater rim and not true summit (depending on timing / how the group is feeling)
Pace & Experience: Moderate, steady pace. Recent high-gain hiking experience required.
Assistant Leader Call: Looking for Assistant Leaders with current CPR and WFA (Wilderness First Aid) badges to support the trip.
Required Gear:
- Climbing Helmet: Required due to rockfall risk in the boulder field.
- Traction: Microspikes or crampons required (autumn frost, verglas, or early-season ice on upper slopes).
- Footwear & Gloves: Sturdy boots; Gaiters help keep ash and scree out.
- Layers & Essentials: Full autumn layering system (wind/waterproof shell, insulated jacket, warm hat, gloves), headlamp with extra batteries, minimum 2L water/electrolytes (3L rec) , and the Ten Essentials.
Optional Gear:
- Ice Axe: Optional based on current low snow coverage, but bring if preferred for personal security on slick patches.
