Activity Notes

Mt. Jefferson, Jefferson Park Glacier: grade III, 40-55* snow, glacier terrain, low 5th alpine rock

Jeff Park Glacier is a committing route, that requires all team members to be physically fit, have strong snow climbing skills, and have moderate experience climbing in high angle alpine. The route is comprised of a series of technical challenges, with few convenient opportunities to bail. This will be a three day climb, with two nights camped in the high alpine.

This climb requires...

  • significant physical fitness, all-day energy
  • dialed crevasse rescue skills
  • moderate amount of snow climbing experience
  • familiarity with cleaning trad gear
  • alpine camping

This route is comparable in difficulty to the North Ridge of Mt. Baker, but this route would be a longer day, and with less ice climbing.

As a note, when assembling climbers for a Mazama climb, I deliberately strive for a diverse, and balanced team. I principally take into consideration an individual's physical fitness, skill level for the route, and how they can contribute to the climb team’s diversity. Diversity consideration especially applies to the selection of the assistant and lead climber(s), to help expand the diversity in prospective Climb Leaders in the Mazamas.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or the assistant.
