Activity Notes
As of may 25th, a trip report on washington trails: ice ax and crampons necessary. And there has been glissading. That could change over the next few weeks if it stays warm.
But for now the requirements are:
BCEP graduate
Ice Ax
Crampons
helmet
poles strongly recommented
boots with vibram type souls
10 essentials
clothing for all weather especially wind
There are 2 campgrounds very close by
staircase is in the olympic national park and has running water and flush toilets
And big creek which has pit toilets and pump water. And is closer to the trailhead.
We can meet the night before at big creek CG if anyone wants to
The sites are first come first serve
staircase is reserve and is full at this time
But they do open up sights 2 weeks before the date at 7 AM (on recreation.gov)
If you decide to drive the morning of, plan on 4 hours.
Getting there:
From Hoodsport on the hood canal: leave Hwy 101 on State Route 119. Follow 119 the 9.3 miles to its end. Turn right on Forest Road 24 and follow 1.6 miles. Turn left on Forest Road 2419. Pass by the lower trailhead at 4.9 miles and go another 1.7 miles and turn left on Forest Road 2419-014. The upper trailhead is at the end of the road. Amenities at the upper trailhead include a vault toilet, picnic table and great views.
We will meet at the upper trailhead 7:30 AM May 24th
If the weather turns bad I will cancel by June 22nd at 9 PM.
