Activity Notes

The Wallows are more like the rocky mountains than the Cascades.  Mazamas don't do many trips here, so this is an opportunity to climb an easy peak in a beautiful area.  We have a moderately strenuous  backpack in to lovely Ice Lake (8 miles, 3200 feet gain on a good trail), where we will camp.   The climb of Matterhorn is another 2000 feet up and five miles and is non technical class 2. Depending on the group's interest and ability, we have the possibility of also doing the neighboring peak, Sacajawea.

We will start from Wallowa lake the morning of Friday, July 30 at 9AM.  You should drive there the previous day  and spend the night; there is a campground, or you could stay in a motel in LaGrande. You need reservations to camp at Wallowa state park but they are very hard to get.

We will hike in Friday, climb Saturday, and hike out and drive home Sunday. Drive time is about 6 hours.
