Activity Notes

During this field session, we will head to the snow slopes near Timberline Ski Resort on Mt. Hood to learn and practice skills used to climb snowy mountains.

Meeting Time & Place for Snow Session: 8:00 AM @ Lower Parking Lot of Timberline Lodge

Drive Time: Takes around 2 hours, depending on where in the Metro area you start from. Please be conservative and allow yourself more time than you might think to account for stopping for gas, coffee or (Pro Tip:) a breakfast burrito in Sandy.

Map (optional): Mt. Hood Geo-Graphics or map from Mazamas Site (Mt. Hood, south)

Equipment:

  • Backpack – with appropriate weight based on pack-weight progression
  • 10 Essentials
  • Harness and climbing tackle (cord, ‘biners, belay device, personal pro)
  • Mountaineering Boots – stiff-soled and waterproof Renting Recommend
  • Crampons – fitted to mountaineering boots in Portland Renting Recommend
  • Ice Axe – properly fitted in Portland Renting Recommend
  • Helmet - properly fitted in Portland Renting Recommend
  • Snowshoes - properly fitted in Portland Renting Recommend
  • Insulated sit pad – much warmer than snow!
  • Clothing – for wind and cold weather
  • Extra Hats and Gloves – for changing after the first pair gets wet
  • Extra Insulation Layer – We’re going to be standing around a lot
  • Hand- and Toe-Warmers – just in case
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Water
  • Garbage bag – or some other functional glissade device
