Activity Notes
Sacajawea (9843 ft) and Matterhorn (9835 ft) are the two highest peaks in the Wallowa Mountains and the sixth and seventh tallest summits in Oregon.
Since the drive from Portland is approximately six hours, plan on arriving on Sunday with the option to join us at Wallowa Lake State Park where we have two reserved campsites. The $82 cost will be shared among the participants.
Monday: We’ll meet at the Wallowa Lake Trailhead at 8 am, backpack to Ice Lake and set-up camp there for two nights. About 8 miles with 3400 feet of elevation gain.
Tuesday: Climb day. The route up Matterhorn gains 2400 feet in two miles on Class 2 terrain. After enjoying the view from the summit, we’ll take on the traverse to Sacajawea which involves navigating along an exposed ridgeline and around or over several gendarmes. Some sections are Class 3 with loose rock and exposure.
Wednesday: We’ll pack up and hike to the trailhead, arriving early in the afternoon.
Totals for the three days will be around 22 miles and 6500 feet of gain.
Before applying, please ensure that your Mazamas profile is up-to-date and includes relevant information about your fitness level. Applicants should have recent experience backpacking trails with 3000+ ft of gain and be comfortable with exposed Class 3 scrambling. A helmet is the only required climbing gear.
Team selection will be completed by August 28.
