Activity Notes
This is a provisional hike for Stephen De Herrera to become a Mazamas hike leader.
Saddle mountain is my (Stephen's) favorite coast range hike. At 3,288 feet, the iconic double-peaked summit is one of the tallest points in northwest Oregon. The trail ascends through old growth forest and meadows that are full of wildflowers from May-June. If the weather is clear, we'll be treated to panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Cascade volcanoes to the east.
The trail is 5.2 mi round trip and gains 1700'. Participants should be comfortable with the distance and elevation gain, as the upper mountain is steep and rocky with parts of the trail covered in wire fencing to prevent erosion.
We will meet up to carpool at the Target on 185th at 7:30 a.m., and plan to start hiking no later than 9:00 a.m. No parking permits are required, but the parking lot does tend to fill up quickly so carpooling is encouraged.
