Activity Notes
Join for a stunning hike to the Johnston Ridge Observatory at Mount St. Helens and experience spectacular views of the crater and blast zone.
This is an out-and-back trail with about 10.5 miles total and approximately 1,900 feet elevation gain. We'll start on the partially-shaded Hummocks Trail before joining up with Boundary West Trail, which has less cover from the sun. The trail climbs steadily through the blast zone with switchbacks on exposed hillsides and ridgelines that are subject to some erosion.
Johnston Ridge Observatory is still closed due to a 2023 landslide blocking Spirit Lake Highway. The observatory sits eerily deserted, creating a unique atmosphere that you won't be able to experience when it opens back up again.
The volcanic geology and potential for wildlife sightings make this an incredibly dramatic hike. Recommended for those comfortable with moderate elevation gain and 10+ mile distances. The exposed sections and volcanic terrain require good traction and sun protection.
