Mileage:9  Elevation:1500  Drive:30  Meeting Location: Cougar Rest Area

This 9-mile, with 1600 feet of elevation hike climbs through dense old-growth forest to a barren cinder plateau that bursts with wildflowers and unobstructed views. The trail begins at the end of Road 83 near Lava Canyon and climbs steadily through one of the remaining stands of old-growth forest on Mount St. Helens' eastern flanks. One of the most scenic hikes on the south side of Mount St. Helens, this route follows a ridge above the rubbly course of the Muddy River, offering numerous views to the north and east before reaching the Plains of Abraham. At the top, you'll have sweeping views highlighted by the 300-foot slot at the head of Ape Canyon, with Mount Adams visible in the distance.
