The Heartsaver® 'First Aid/CPR AED' (previously named Hike Leader First Aid &CPR) course is designed to prepare students to provide first aid, perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. This is a blended-learning course - you will be completing coursework online and participating in an in-person skills test at the Mazama Mountaineering Center (MMC).
Under this system, students complete the videos at their own pace at home. Upon completion, students print a completion certificate and bring it with them to the skills practice and test session at the MMC.
Students will then receive their cards (valid for 2-years) in the mail. Easy!
Note: Registrants who do not bring the certificate into class will not be able to get an AHA card.
Complete information on how to access the on-line portion will be e-mailed to students within two business days of registration.
Priority for this course is given to existing hike leaders needing to renew their certification and prospective hike leaders needing to certify for the first time. If you are a prospective hike leader, please indicate so in your profile and make sure to also sign up for a Hike Leader Training!
Activity Notes
This Adult CPR & AED and First Aid course through The American Heart Association (AHA) is a blend of online course work, and then first aid and CPR practice/skills test in-person at the Mazama Mountaineering Center (MMC). For more information, see the First Aid page.
Mazama Hike Leaders and instructors will have priority acceptance in this course. For standalone CPR certification please apply to a CPR-only course. This course does not satisfy the Climb Leader First Aid requirement.
Once the registration period for this course closes, you will be notified if you are accepted or not. If accepted, you will receive a unique link via email from elearning.heart.org to access online course material that MUST be completed prior to your in-person session at the MMC. Without completing the online certificate, you will not be able to participate or receive the AHA eCard.
If you are an active Mazama climb, hike, or canyoneering leader, please contact your respective Mazamas program chair after you complete this course for possible course reimbursement. You will need your course completion certificate to be eligible. For questions on reimbursement eligibility, contact your Mazamas Program chair.
Other questions can be directed to cpr@mazamas.org.
