Activity Notes
Table Mountain is now accessible from the Bonneville Hot Springs Resort which makes for a shorter but still challenging adventure. Totals are about 10 miles and 3500 feet of elevation gain (compared to 16 miles and 4300 feet from the North Bonneville Trailhead.)
This is one of the toughest hikes in the gorge. I intend to do the loop clockwise. The West Table Mountain trail rises 1200 feet in only 0.8 miles, much of it on loose rock along an exposed ridge line. The descent via the unusually steep Heartbreak Ridge trail has two sections with 700 ft of elevation loss in just 0.3 mile each. The first of these is directly down a boulder field. Applicants should be comfortable with steep, loose, rocky trails and have recently done a hike with 3000+ feet of elevation gain.
I have hiked to Table Mountain from the North Bonneville trailhead but not from the resort. In Mazamas' parlance, this means the beginning part of the hike (from the resort to the PCT) will be "exploratory."
We'll carpool from the MMC departing at 7:30 am. The resort charges a $10 parking fee for each vehicle. If there is snow/ice on the trail or rain in the forecast, we will likely do an alternative hike.
