BCEP 2025 Team 14: Elk Meadows Loop Hike

Activity Notes

Now that you understand how to use that map & compass (& GPS is okay too!) & how to pack your gear for the outdoor adventure, its time for you to show off those skills on a real hike.  Students will be in charge of leading us through the snowpack into the Elk Meadows cabin.  Each student will take turns leading the group to get the full experience of the challenges of navigating.  Use this hike a an indicator of whether or not the gear you've packed is working for you.  This hike has an early start from the Hood River Meadows parking lot.  Please be aware the start time is when we expect you to be at the trailhead, packs on, and ready to begin hiking in.  

Please also bring your technical climbing gear with you on this hike (helmet, harness, carabiners, personal pro, and belay device), and be sure to continue to bring that gear for every subsequent BCEP session since we will be practicing technical climbing skills on EVERY time.  We will take time to demonstrate how to safely setup, safety check, and initiate a rappel.  With luck, each of you will get a couple chances to perform an actual rappel.  We expect there to be a lot of snow on the ground, so please pack appropriately & snowshoes and/or microspikes are highly recommended.
