This is part of a two mountain climbing trip (the other peak is Chief Joseph).  We will hike in and camp near Thorpe creek meadows for several  nights. The drive is 5-6 hours  from Portland, so you need to leave the day before the start and camp or stay  at a motel. Sacajawea Peak is the highest peak in the Wallowa Mountains, really the northern high point on a marble ridge that includes the unnamed Peak 9775 and the Matterhorn, only 12 feet lower. The approach is via the abandoned Thorp Creek Trail which, however, is used often enough to be obvious for most of the route. From the Thorp Creek Meadows, the ascent is quite steep but never technical, and the views from the top are expansive. In summer, watch for signs of encroaching thunderstorms: you do not want to be caught at the summit area exposed to lightning, driving rain, and low visibility. This is a nontechnical climb, but cross country  travel on steep slopes is involved.
