Activity Notes

Depending on conditions, we will do one of the following:

Plan A: June Lake Loop Snowshoe

If you are new to snowshoeing, or are looking for a relaxed paced outing through a scenic winter forest, join us for a June Lake Snowshoe! Beginning around dawn, we will follow a series of ski/snowshoe trails to reach June Lake, leaving plenty of time to stop for pictures and to enjoy the views. We will stop at the lake for snacks & hot cocoa before proceeding above tree-line, along the Pika Trail, for great views of Mt St Helens. Here we can stop, gaze up at the mountain, and discuss the history of the area, including the 1980 eruption. We will then descend the worm flows climbing route back to our cars. (5.75 miles round trip) Jan 3 Update: snow is in the forecast, we may get to snowshoe after all!

Plan B: June Lake Out & Back Hike/Snowshoe

As described above, but instead of continuing along the Pika Trail, we will return the way we came. This will be the option if snow levels are too low to hike the loop safely, or if avalanche conditions are concerning.  (4 miles round trip)

Plan C: Palmateer Point

If Marble Mountain is inaccessible due to landslide, or some other natural disaster, the backup is to hike Palmateer Point. If the weather is good, this hike boasts great views of Mt Hood. This hike has a little more elevation gain, but is still a good entry to snowshoeing, or winter hiking.

Plan on dressing for the winter weather (layers!), bringing the 10 Essentials, snowshoes and/or micro-spikes, hiking poles, gaiters, and sturdy waterproof boots.

Sno-Park permits are required to park at Marble Mountain. One day permit is $25, seasonal permit is $50, and must be purchased ahead of time. Carpool is recommended! Questions? lyntyl@gmail.com
