Activity Notes

Hey Gang,

Today will be our introductory hike where we meet each other and work on some of the technical skills.  As you will begin to learn quickly with my team, we tend to start early, but that means we get finished early as well.  Note the start time is 7am, which is the time I expect you to be at the trailhead.  Yeah that's early, I know...get used to it.  I try not to schedule anything on Sundays (altho that does happen on the skills weekends) just so you have some time to yourselves and families during the week.  Our breakout sessions take place during our hikes.  We will work on skills every single hike here on out.  So I encourage everyone to attend all the hikes you can make.  I also encourage everyone to carpool.  A good meeting location is at the Target parking lot on 185th & Evergreen in Hillsboro (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_XbDR-5Rni42fupxs21c2Plmq0bwPFh7XhU2C7xE5U4/edit#gid=1261049189).  We will meet at the Summit Trailhead located on the side of the road Hwy 6 (https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Summit_Trailhead)

Here's the hike itself: https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Storey_Burn_Loop_Hike

I am more concerned with reinforcing the technically challenging skills, and not so much the difficulty of the hikes, but the hikes will get increasing more difficult over the class.  This hike we will work on the basic knots you need to learn for the class, and we will work on rappelling, probably the most technically challenging skill you will work on during class.  Please bring all of your climbing gear with you (listed below) on this hike (and every hike).

You will need: Helmet, harness, personal protective leash (we will make it), rappel device and large locking carabiner, autoblock and locking carabiner, prussik (we will make it) and locking carabiner.

Side note: we practice rain or shine, cold or hot.  We live in the PNW so it will be cold and wet haha.  Please be prepared with enough warm clothing & raingear to be standing around outdoors for a few hours :)
