Activity Notes

SPECIAL NOTE:  With the temporary closure of the Mazama Lodge, MFA will have exclusive use of the lodge Saturday night and Sunday.  However the kitchen is closed and meals will not be provided.  Students are expected to provide their own. meals and the price has been adjusted to reflect the change.

The MFA Skill Builder is an 8 hour, outdoor experience at either the Mazamas lodge in Government Camp, Oregon or weather dependent alternate location; Portland, Oregon. The MFA skill builder will teach the Wilderness First Aid (WFA) first-aider how to apply first aid skills in the wilderness, perform advanced patient assessment, improvise equipment and cope with wilderness-specific conditions. It will build upon the WFA foundation where you are caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care while acting as a part of a climbing team in alpine or rock mass casualty incidents. Emphasis is placed on long term patient care management and specific injury evaluation.

ACTIVITY NOTES

This will be an offering of the new Mountain First Aid (MFA) Skill-builder.  The 30 hour MFA badge is being replaced in two parts:

Part 1 is the pre-requisite completion of a minimum 16 hour Wilderness First Aid (WFA) training course.  The 16 hour certification or more advanced wilderness first Aid training (i.e. MFA, WFR or WMP) must be current at the time of the MFA skill-builder training date.

Part 2 will be an 8 hour, outdoor experience at either the Mazamas lodge in Government Camp, Oregon or weather dependent alternate location; Portland, Oregon.

The MFA skill builder will teach the WFA first-aider how to apply first aid skills in the wilderness, perform advanced patient assessment, improvise equipment and cope with wilderness-specific conditions. It will build upon the WFA foundation where you are caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care while acting as a part of a climbing team in alpine or rock mass casualty incidents.  Emphasis is placed on long term patient care management and specific injury evaluation.

ICS students will have scheduling priority.  This skill builder can also be used to refresh a current MFA badge; see details Mountaineering First Aid Recertification
