~9.5 miles round trip, 2300 elevation gain

This is a great hike in the Zigzag area that features a spectacular up-close view of the west side of a still snow-cloaked Mount Hood at the top. It also passes Burnt Lake on the way, a welcome bonus!

Note that we will likely encounter snow on the upper part of the trail (deep snow was reported at the end of May). Please bring some sort of traction aid such as microspikes or snowshoes. Also consider bringing a windproof/waterproof layer, especially if rain is forecast.

We will likely stop for a well-earned meal on the way back. For example, this place is pretty good: https://www.whistlestopwelches.com

Carpooling is encouraged! We will organize carpools at the Gateway Park and Ride parking garage at 8:30AM. Drivers, please note that a Northwest Forest Pass is required at the trailhead. Also please remember to bring some gas money for your driver!
