The first two miles of this popular route are a trail for all seasons, and is usually open all year. This section of the trail rambles along the Salmon through classic old growth rainforest - some of the most accessible in the Portland region. Beyond the riverside segment, the trail climbs to a sweeping viewpoint of the vast Salmon River canyon, with unseen waterfalls roaring in the depths below.

Activity Notes

This trail winds through mossy old growth forest next to the wild and scenic Salmon River. Chinook and Coho salmon, along with Steelhead, Rainbow and Cutthroat trout are found in the river. We will go up the trail about 6 miles to the Kinzel Lake trail junction and then return.  About 1100 feet of elevation gain.
