This is a full day in the field practicing rock skills. Held at Horsethief Butte, you'll get the opportunity to apply the skills you learned indoors on actual rock. The day will include movement basics, belaying, rappelling, traversing, fixed line travel, and more.

Activity Notes

Skills covered during this field session are:

  • Demonstrate proper hand technique and correct setup and use of belay device.
  • Demonstrate proper anchor connection with personal protection leash and clove hitch for belay setup to belay-from-above.
  • Demonstrate proper device setup and sequence for rappelling.
  • Set up an autoblock for a rappel.
  • Use proper body & hand position and techniques while rappelling.
  • Demonstrate proper voice command sequences while rappelling.
  • Provide a fireman's belay.
  • Describe techniques used in basic 5th class climbing (body position, lie back, mantle, etc.).
  • Demonstrate proper technique for up and down climbing on low 5th class terrain.
  • Identify the proper locations to connect to an anchor (shelf or masterpoint).
  • Attach to an anchor with personal protection leash and clove hitch.
  • Tie into the end of the rope for top rope climbing.
  • Use proper voice commands with a belayer in top rope climbing.
  • Connect to a horizontal or vertical fixed line with a prusik.
  • Pass protection on a fixed line.
