Activity Notes

This is our time to learn about rock climbing. Please bring all climbing equipment including harness, helmet, belay device and carabiner, all additional carabiners, slings and cordage. If in doubt, bring it! You will not be able to participate without the required equipment! Optional equipment includes rock shoes and mechanical assist belay devices such as a Grigri.

Please be at the Crawford Oaks Trailhead by 8:15. This is a Washington State Park area and does require a parking pass, which can be purchased at the lot. From here we will need to do a short carpool (three per car) to the Horsethief parking lot, which is about 0.8 miles west of Crawford Oaks. Please wear masks in the car and, if possible, keep the windows open. One of the assistants will meet you there to walk you in to the area where we will be starting our day. We will work on the following skills:

Review and practice belaying with a belay device (including proper use of belay signals)
Belay from the top of the route
Review and practice rappelling
Traverse a fixed line
Ascend a fixed line
Learn and practice basic rock climbing moves such as friction, mantles, jams, laybacks, edging, stemming
