Activity Notes

Beware the Ides of March! Join AYM for a long hike / snowshoe (depending on conditions) into the dark heart of the rugged country north of Detroit Lake. We'll start at an obscure trailhead near Detroit Lake and follow a jeep road up and up, into the mountains north of the rugged canyon. As we ascend, we will hike into the snow zone, likely requiring snowshoes. Our destination is the summit of Sardine Mountain, elevation 4,932 feet. We will only summit the mountain if conditions permit - safety is our first priority. But up here we will have views out across the Cascades on a clear day. Plan on a long and challenging day full of snow, waterfalls, and views. I can't wait!

  • Hike: 14 miles out and back (at most)
  • Elevation gain: 3,900 feet
  • Drivetime from Portland: 90 minutes (180 miles round-trip)

Please bring the 10 Essentials, adequate rain gear and some means of snow travel - either spikes or snowshoes. The leader will be in contact before the hike with further instructions based on the conditions. If both the weather and conditions are terrible, the hike destination will be moved. No dogs.

Meet at Gateway Transit Center at 7AM. Leader: Matt Reeder
