The first two miles of this popular route are a trail for all seasons, and is usually open all year. This section of the trail rambles along the Salmon through classic old growth rainforest - some of the most accessible in the Portland region. Beyond the riverside segment, the trail climbs to a sweeping viewpoint of the vast Salmon River canyon, with unseen waterfalls roaring in the depths below.

Activity Notes

This hike is tentative until I finish scouting the route in the next two weeks.  I will remove the "tentative" after the scouting trip and will email all who have signed up for the hike.

0915 meet at the trailhead and we will depart at 0930.  Directions to the trailhead:  Take paved road to Trillium Lake past the campground and lake then turn left onto FR 2656 for Salmon River Trail #742.  After 1.1 miles, keep left at junction and .01 miles right at a "Y" junction.  After .7 miles, go right on FR 2656-309 for 2.0 miles arriving at the Salmon River East Trailhead on the right.

The pace is 1.5 - 2.0 mph casual with water breaks.  I bring a stove if you want to bring the water and tea, coffee or soup for lunch.  Our focus is getting out to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature with a comfortable sized group sharing similar interests.

If you have any questions, please send me an email.
