This hike starts at the Lower Smith Creek Trailhead, and reaches a mid-point at the popular Lava Canyon Trailhead. Over the 6.5 mile lollipop-loop, you will encounter views of Mount St. Helens, multiple waterfalls (including 200 foot Lava Canyon Falls), the remains of a bridge washed away by the 1980 eruption, climb two metal ladders, and cross a swaying suspension bridge high above the Muddy River.

General Route Info There are a few important considerations on this hike - primarily the presence of two vertical steel ladders required to complete the trail. The first, approximately 10 feet tall, is part of a short side-trail that ascends a large freestanding lava feature known as 'The Ship', and provides a good view of Lower Lava Canyon Falls. The second, much taller at approximately 30 feet, is on the main trail and cannot be avoided, on both ascent and descent. Both ladders are quite sturdy and in good condition. There is one short piece of trail adjacent to the tall Lava Canyon Falls that is moderately exposed. Care should be taken on this section, as a slip could lead to a long fall to the riverbed below. When nearing the upper trailhead and halfway point, the trail crosses a wooden suspension bridge high above the river. While the bridge is well constructed and sturdy, it can be somewhat unnerving to cross as each board sinks a little when weighted, and the entire bridge sways side-to-side with your passing. The bridge forms part of a 1-mile loop from the trail intersection to the upper trailhead, so can be avoided if necessary.
