The first two miles of this popular route are a trail for all seasons, and is usually open all year. This section of the trail rambles along the Salmon through classic old growth rainforest - some of the most accessible in the Portland region. Beyond the riverside segment, the trail climbs to a sweeping viewpoint of the vast Salmon River canyon, with unseen waterfalls roaring in the depths below.

Activity Notes

Get outside on Black Friday and hike a peaceful trail through old growth rainforest below Mt Hood. The trail follows the river until the wilderness boundary where it will become steeper, eventually reaching several overlooks into the river valley below. We will have lunch on one of those overlooks, just short of 4 miles from the car. Total expected stats 7.8 miles with 950' of gain.

The trailhead is just before the bridge. NW forest pass, America the Beautiful, or Senior pass is required. There is not a kiosk at the trailhead. We will carpool from the MMC, leaving at 8:30, arriving at the trailhead 9:45. Carpooling encouraged.

This is a provisional hike for Kadin Mangalik to become a Mazamas hike leader. Kadin will be meeting folks at Mazamas 08:30, while Bill Stein, the hike's evaluator, will be meeting folks at Mazama Lodge 09:00, where folks who spent Thanksgiving night there are welcome to join the hike.
