Activity Notes

In the backcountry, there is no other treatment for anaphylaxis than epinephrine. Time matters and 15 minutes can be the difference in someone's life. Oregon law codified in ORS 433.800 through 433.830 a statute that allows trained individuals, when a licensed health care professional is not immediately available, to administer lifesaving treatment in the state of Oregon. Students will attend a December 2 classroom-based course, taught by a physician. Upon completion of this course, participants may want to obtain an epinephrine autoinjector from a pharmacy. Persons trained in this course and attempting to obtain epinephrine from the pharmacy are responsible for all costs associated with the medication, not the Mazamas. The presentation will be including an optional information on Naloxone Rescue for Opioid Overdose.  goto Oregon Health Authority for more information on how Oregon law allows lay people to carry and use naloxone (Narcan) on others. Note:   The Oregon Health Authority is very prescriptive on what materials must be presented for EpiPen training.  Training providers are required to follow Oregon training protocols in order for the prescriptions to be issued at the end of class. This is the link for Training on Lifesaving Treatment Protocols: Allergic reaction that will be presented during the class and available after the class for your review.  It is helpful to have reviewed the materials before class.
