Activity Notes
As of August 16, the Yakama Nation has closed the Tract D area due to concerns about fire danger. So, the originally planned Bird Creek Meadows hike has been changed to Lemei Rock.
The trailhead is about a 2-hour drive from Portland and the final few miles are on a rough, unpaved road.
This is an out-and-back trail to the highest point in the Indian Heaven Wilderness. For those who are up for it, there will be an option to scramble to the top of Lemei Rock. The scramble rises about 300 feet and has some short sections of Class 3 terrain. Depending on our pace, we may also do the side trip to Lake Wapiki. We'll cover 9 - 10 miles with about 2400 feet of elevation gain.
Given the length of the drive and the hike, we'll get an early start. We'll depart from the MMC at 6:30 am and aim to be back by 5 pm.
This will be my first time on these trails which in Mazamas parlance makes this an "exploratory" hike.
