Rooster Rock, South Face

Activity Notes

Overview: Rooster Rock is less than a 30 minute drive out in the Gorge.  The climb is two pitches.  The first is 4th class and is done on a vertical fixed line.  The second pitch is low 5th class (5.4) and will be belayed from above.  The climb can be done in boots.  To get down, you rappel the full length of the rope back to the ground.  The hike in is short.  Climbers should be prepared for fixed line travel, top rope climbing on a vertical pitch, rappelling, and all of the knots and safety checks these skills require.  

Please refresh these skills if you have not recently used them.

Location/Time: We will meet at towards the west end of the Rooster Rock State Park parking lot (near the bathrooms), located HERE ,  and be ready to hike in at 3 PM.  Carpooling is encouraged.

An OREGON STATE PARK PERMIT (or equivalent) is required for parking ($10.00 one day pass available at the entrance). 

Gear Needed:

1. Harness
2. Helmet
3. Boots or approach shoes
4. Rock climbing shoes (optional)
5. ATC-style belay and rappel device
6. Autoblock
7. Prussik cords (2)
8. Locking carabiners (6 or more)
9. Non-locking carabiner (2 or more)
10. Personal protection leash or double length (120 cm) nylon runner (2)
11. Snacks and a small water bottle
12. Small pack
13. Sunscreen
14. 10 essentials

Other Notes: 

This is a fair weather climb.If it is not dry and rain-free on the climb day or if there are heavy rains the day before,  we will reschedule the climb, and accepted participants will have priority to participate on the rescheduled day.

Priority of acceptance will be given to (1) recent BCP grads who have not climbed Rooster Rock and whose BCEP team leaders have not led a Rooster Rock climb, and (2) Mazama members who have a record of volunteer contributions to the organization.

What to Expect After Applying: apply by the end of the day on Sunday, June 21st.  I will select the climb team and notify everyone of their status by end of the day on Monday, June 22nd.
