Tatoosh Trail

A challenging point-to-point hike of the Tatoosh Trail with a car shuttle. The trail navigates the complex system of ridges surrounding Tatoosh Peak in the Tatoosh Wilderness. The rewards of this trail include wildflowers blooming in alpine meadows and panoramic views of Rainier, the other Tatoosh peaks, and alpine lakes.

The hike is roughly 11 difficult miles over rugged trail with nearly 4100' of elevation gain. In a typical snow year the trail will hold snow in June, so be prepared to bring microspikes if trail reports indicate snow is present. Portions of the trail may be exposed and may have uneven or loose footing. Applicants should have a profile that demonstrates a high level of fitness and hiking ability. Applicants are encouraged to email the leader if you are willing to offer a vehicle for the car shuttle and your vehicle seats more than 5 passengers. I will accept a maximum of 6 participants if we have adequate vehicles to support 6 hikers but will limit the team to 4 or 5 participants otherwise.

We'll plan to start hiking from the north trailhead at 7 am with a car deposited at the south trailhead. The drive to the trailhead from Portland is roughly 3 hours. Once a team is selected we will arrange carpooling with an option to camp at Butter Creek or La Wis Wis Campground the night of the 18th. Butter Creek is a primitive first-come first-serve campsite whereas La Wis Wis is a developed campground with reservations and numerous first-come first-serve sites. Camping is not required to participate but all hikers will be expected to be present at the trailhead promptly at 7 am on the 19th.

This will be an exploratory hike, meaning the leader hasn't hiked this trail before.
