Activity Notes
This is one of 6 hikes we will do on July 20th to 25th. Come and camp in the area or drive up and meet us there. We will leave the Cougar Washington Rest Area at 9:30
Mileage:12 Elevation:2700 Drive:25 Meeting Location: Cougar Rest Area
The road to the Sheep Canyon trailhead has washed out and the trailhead is closed. The hike to the Sheep Canyon viewpoints now requires an extra 2.4 miles and begins at the Blue Lake trailhead. At 12.5 miles, including the extra miles, offers spectacular old growth forest, waterfalls in canyons, flower-filled meadows, and a close-up view of Mount St. Helens and its eruption aftermath. The trail crosses Sheep Canyon and provides views up to the alpine meadows of Mount St. Helens. The route leads to the blast zone geology where you can see the remains of trees ripped apart from the 1980 blast rising amongst new growth, with views of Mount Rainier and Coldwater Peak.
