Although it is a Pacific Northwest classic, the hike around Mount St. Helens is one of the more challenging backpacking trips for its length, suitable only for fit and experienced backpackers. Trail hazards include difficult river, creek, and gully crossings (some aided by ropes), and difficult route-finding in lava beds and areas with seasonal erosion. Water sources and campsites are limited and nearly all of the trail is very exposed to the elements. However, those who do make the trip are rewarded with jaw-dropping scenery, abundant wildflowers, and relative solitude. The 30-mile Loowit Trail itself is not crossed by any road. It can be accessed from other trailheads. The June Lake Trailhead provides the closest access.

Activity Notes

A three-day backpack circumnavigating Mt. St. Helens via the Loowit Trail. Note that this is a very rugged trail with steep, loose terrain (a fixed rope provide assistance out of the Toutle River drainage). The trail covers roughly 33 miles and over 6200' of elevation gain. Much of the trail has limited water and significant exposure to the elements (sun, wind, and possibly rain). Applicants must have a high level of fitness and have wilderness backpacking experience; please make that experience available via your Mazamas profile before applying to this activity. This activity is not appropriate for beginner backpackers or those who have not recently and regularly been doing C-level hikes or more demanding activities.

We'll meet at the MMC on Saturday at 7 AM to carpool to the June Lake trailhead. We'll camp at the Toutle River on Saturday night and somewhere in the vicinity of Pumice Butte on Sunday night. We'll hike out Monday morning.
