Activity Notes

Celebrate (?) the return of Daylight Savings Time by experiencing sweeping views on the Cook Hill Loop on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge. This is an 8.5-mile loop with roughly 3,000 feet of elevation gain. We will hike the loop counterclockwise. The route climbs steadily through steep forested slopes before breaking out onto open hillsides (also steep) before reaching the summit. The descent follows a gentler ridge trail.

Trail conditions are mostly soft forest tread on the ascent, with two creeks to rock hop and a couple of easily navigable downed trees. As of February 28, the descent had about two miles of 6–12 inches of snow coverage, but no snowshoes or microspikes were required.

Expect a pace of 2.5–3 mph on flatter sections and 1.5–2 mph on steeper climbs. No restroom or water facilities are available at the trailhead. No parking pass is required at this location.

We will carpool from Rock Haven at 8:00 a.m., or you can meet us at the trailhead at 8:50 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. departure.

Before applying, please ensure your profile includes information about your hiking and/or other outdoor activities during the past few months.
