Activity Notes

Join us for a week of adventure in the Land of Enchantment for daily hikes at altitudes from 6,000 – 13,000 feet in the glorious mountains of northern New Mexico. The second week of October is prime time to enjoy the fall foliage of the area.

We will fly into Albuquerque where we will rent vehicles and stay overnight. The next morning we will start our hiking in the Sandia mountains then drive to Taos on the scenic High Road. We will be staying in a pastoral setting just a mile and a half outside Taos in a 7000 square foot 22 room mansion whose original construction began in the 1700's. Each of 6 bedrooms includes both a bathroom and a fireplace. And there is a hot tub and sauna for post hike relaxation.

Our hikes will take us to the Enchanted Circle north of Taos, to the state capital of Santa Fe and surrounding area, to the Bandelier National Monument ( famous for its extensive Ancestral Pueblo Indian ruins ), to the Valles Caldera National Preserve to witness elk in rutting season, and to Wheeler Peak, tallest in the state at 13,161 feet. We will also find time to immerse ourselves in the local arts and cultures.

The cost for the outing, which includes lodging, the leader's costs, and Mazama fees, is $1,100. Participants are responsible for their travel, meals and incidentals. All participants must be Mazama members. Membership is available at a very nominal cost.

Full payment is required by the signup deadline of April 15, 2026. Cancellation after June 1 will result in forfeiture in full unless and until a satisfactory replacement is found. Only those fully vaccinated against COVID need apply.
