This trail, which commemorates the forced removal of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Alsea peoples to the Yachats area in the 19th century, starts from beach at Agate Point and visits art including the Amanda statue on the way to the Cape Perpetua Stone Shelter and multiple viewpoints high above the Pacific Ocean. Aside from a short loop at the top, this hike is an out-and-back.
Activity Notes
Amanda’s Trail commemorates the forced removal of coastal indigenous peoples. Our destination is the statue of Amanda, who suffered injustices in the 1860s. Our hike will start from the Cape Perpetua Trailhead, at which NW Forest Pass or another federal pass must be displayed. The typical start to this hike is in the city of Yachats, but I decided to change it after reaching the Stone Shelter at lunchtime, only to have its dramatic view of the south coast marred by direct sun in our faces.
Our plan is to hike first on the Whispering Spruce Trail to the Stone Shelter, getting the famous “best view on the Oregon Coast” with the sun somewhere off to the east. There we will pick up Amanda’s Trail, hiking down to Amanda’s statue and back up again, skipping the Stone Shelter and returning to our vehicles.
Then we may choose the longer hike to the coastal features (Devil’s Churn, Thor’s Well) as high tide approaches, or we could make it quite a bit shorter by moving our vehicles to one of the closer trailheads. We’ll use walkie talkies or cell phones so we can communicate with each other about parking availability.
I don't have the exact stats, but we'll hike approximately 7 miles and gain approximately 1,350'.
We're leaving Tigard Transit Center at the odd time of 06:15, timed for anyone taking a bus there from Portland. It's a long drive to the central coast, and you can view our route at https://maps.app.goo.gl/DvSCDfgv3oAp5T5E6.
