Activity Notes
Looking for a long day on the trail out in the desert? Join the Mazamas for a fun exploration of the lower Deschutes Canyon east of The Dalles. We'll start at Deschutes State Recreation Area and hike upstream 5-7 miles until we feel like stopping for lunch. Along the way, we'll investigate basalt formations, watch the birds who inhabit the canyon, and talk about the canyon's history as part of an infamous railroad war in the early 20th Century. We'll stop for lunch somewhere between 5 and 7 miles from the trailhead, depending on how far we feel like going. As this hike is mostly flat, plan on a quick pace of 2-2.5mph or perhaps even faster if we feel like it. The miles will go by quicker than you realize!
Hike: approximately 12 miles out and back with 500 feet of elevation gain.
Meet at the MMC at 7:30 AM or at the trailhead at 9:15 AM. We may wish to stop for a drink and snacks in The Dalles or Hood River on the way home.
We will hike rain or shine but this hike will be cancelled if ice or snow threaten the drive to the trailhead.
