This is an C level Mazama Hike that occurs in a wilderness area. C level hikes are difficult or strenuous hikes with either over 15 miles in distance or over 3,000 feet elevation gain. C level hikes require you to apply; once you apply you will receive an email within a few days letting you know if you have been accepted onto the hike.

Activity Notes

<br> If we make it up to Elk Meadows and Elk Mtn, the snowshoe/hike will be about 6 miles with 1300' of elevation gain.<br> If you want to join me on this exploratory route, we will meet at the MMC (located HERE) at 7:00 AM to organize carpools.<br> We should arrive at the Elk Meadows Trailhead  at 8:30 AM and will start hiking around 8:40 AM.<br> We will have lunch on the hike.

I am looking for experienced, fit snowshoers who are comfortable travelling off trail and can complete the route in the available daylight, which should not be a problem if we can manage 1.25-1.5 mph.

There will be some moderately steep slopes to climb and descend.

If the weather is very poor (some combo of temps, wind and precip), we will cancel the hike.

If conditions are not conducive to smooth off-trail travel, we will modify the route to stay on established trails and/or shorten the distance.

This is an exploratory hike for the leader.

We will meet at the MMC to organize carpools at  7 AM, and will drive to the Elk Meadows trailhead located HERE.

A SnoPark pass is required to park at the trailhead.

We will begin snowshoe at 8:40 AM.

Snowshoes are required, as well as the 10 essentials  (headlamp!), plenty of snacks and an extra warm layer for breaks. Poles w/ snow baskets and hand warmers are strongly suggested.

An email with a conditions update will be sent 24-36 hours before the hike start time.

We should return to the MMC no later than 6:30 PM.
