BCEP 2026 Team 03: Timberline Field Session

Activity Notes

For this amazing weekend, we will go over all the necessary snow skills one may encounter on a typical A or B level Mazamas climb.  We will teach the use of crampons and how to properly step uphill and side-hilling steep snow slopes.  Yes you will need to rent or buy crampons and compatible boots.  We will demonstrate an avalanche pit used for assessing snow quality and safety against avalanches.  We will review ice axe use, how to self arrest a fall from any direction, and how to use it to glissade.  We will also go over similar rock climbing skills, such as belaying and rappelling in the snow as the primary anchor.  We will also practice rope team travel and explain the principles of team self arresting.  Finally we will demonstrate the proper use and function of avalanche beacons, and demonstrate how to quickly locate a buried climber.

We will be in snowy conditions all day.  It is often windy and freezing cold in the morning, and can because uncomfortably hot in the afternoon.  You will also be practicing self arrest in the snow, which means you are literally rolling around in the snow, so please dress accordingly and bring a change of dry clothes.

You will need an OR Sno Park Permit that can be purchased online with difficulty or at a retailers like REI or gas stations in Zig Zag/Sandy.  They are $25 for the annual, or $9 for a 3-day permit.

We will meet in the Timberline overflow parking lot.

Afterwards, we will return to the Mazamas lodge for our overnight adventure.
