Activity Notes
Before applying for this hike, if you are not a regular hiker with the Mazamas, please ensure that your profile includes details on your hiking/outdoor activities over the past few months.
The Elevator Shaft is an unofficial and unmaintained historic trail that is a direct route up to Multnomah Basin. On this hike, we will scramble up a steep, mossy, brushy, and loose boulder field that rises 1200 ft in just half a mile. There will be patches of poison oak.
After getting to the top of the boulder field, we will check out Meadow Ridge for a unique gorge viewpoint. After a steep ascent to the basin (about 300 vertical feet in a quarter mile), we'll return via the Cougar Rock and Larch Mountain trails. The hike covers about 6 miles and gains 2200 ft of elevation almost all of which is within one mile. We'll carpool from the MMC parking lot departing at 7:30 am or you can meet us in front of the Multnomah Falls Lodge at 8:10.
