Activity Notes

The Larch Mountain Crater hike is a loop hike starting at the top of Larch Mountain and descending into the ancient remains of the crater, now fully populated with a thriving forest. We’ll also visit Sherrard Point with possible views of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainer, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson in the distance.

This morning hike will start at the top of Larch Mountain and proceed counter clockwise, descending into the crater, finding our way to the head waters of Multnomah Creek, winding to the north side of the mountain and ascending back to the start. Expect to be in the shade of towering trees and surrounded by an aging forest full of diversity. We can catch the view from Sherrard point at the beginning of the hike, end of the hike, or both.

Note: To reach the start of the trail, we will be on, or alongside, Larch Mountain Road for a short distance.

Pace: Level 2 (2 to 2.5 mph) moderate pace, with time for breaks and enjoying the scenery.

We’ll carpool from MMC, meet at 7:45 am, departing at 8 am. Or, alternately, meet at the trail head at 8:50 am. Expect to return to the MMC by 3 pm.

Recommended/required gear: 10 essentials

Parking at Larch Mountain Parking Lot: Northwest Forest Pass (or America the Beautiful Pass) required
