Rooster Rock is a well-known 180-foot pillar of Columbia River basalt located below the cliffs of Crown Point at the western end of Rooster Rock State Park. The rock was an ancient Indian place of worship and was originally called Woutoulat. This is probably the rock mentioned by Lewis & Clark as their camping place on November 2, 1805. According to Oregon Geographic Names, the modern name is of phallic significance.

Activity Notes

Fun 2 pitch climb in the Gorge, I'm planning to go with a small team of 6 total, as this will be my last provisional climb to get promoted to a full climb leader.

We will meet 8:00AM at the State Park, ready to hike in, with all climbing gear on (helmet, harness, basic climbing equipment) a small daypack is recommended to have snacks, water, and climbing shoes with you.

After a 30min walk, we should be at the base and get ready for climbing. The first pitch will be set up as fixed line. Second pitch will be set up as a belay from above. Once we are all up at the top, we will enjoy the view, set up a rappel (60m) and get back to the base. This will probably take us 3-4h.

Quick hike out for 30 minutes, debrief, and if folks are up for it, we can have a drink and food on our way back to Portland.
