Activity Notes

Out-and-back backpack from Timberline Lodge to Paradise Park on Mt. Hood!

Day 1 (Saturday, July 12): Carpool from Rock Haven at 9:15A.M. or you can meet us at Timberline Lodge at 10:30A.M. Suggested gas contribution is $9/passenger. Hike 6 miles/1200' gain to Paradise Park, including descending/ascending the Zigzag Canyon, passing Zigzag Falls.

Day 2 (Sunday, July 13): Optional sunrise hike up the ridge above Split Rock to a viewpoint. Then pack up and head back to Timberline Lodge, descending/ascending the Zigzag Canyon again. 8 miles/2200' gain.

On both days we will have to cross the Zigzag River, which could be a major creek crossing, depending on snowmelt. Paradise Park itself is full of water sources and campsites (some in the open, some in the trees). We will arrive early to secure sites and spend the evening relaxing and playing games!

A gear list will be sent to accepted participants; we will try to share to be efficient. First-time backpackers with strong hiking conditioning are welcome to apply!

We may encounter snow on the sunrise hike.

14 miles, 3400' gain, 6800' high point

***One of my motivations for leading hikes is to provide opportunities to improve mental and physical health and build community. There's a lot of evidence that spending time outside in nature and socially engaging outside of work is good for the body and mind. Minorities tend to experience more stress, especially in today's political climate. Therefore, I invite all races, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, economic classes, religions, languages, and all other minorities to join me on my hikes!
