The Matterhorn is a beautiful peak of whitish marble from the Martin Bridge Formation, with bands of dark reddish Hurwal shale. A climber's trail ascends to the summit.

Activity Notes

The Wallows are more like the rocky mountains than the Cascades. Mazamas don't do many trips here, so this is an opportunity to climb an easy peak in a beautiful area. We have a moderately strenuous backpack in to lovely Ice Lake (8 miles, 3200 feet gain on a good trail), where we will camp. The climb of Matterhorn peak (9835 ft) is another 2000 feet up and five miles and is non technical class 2. We will travel at a relaxed pace and take breaks as needed.
