Activity Notes

Hike Description: This will be an out-and-back hike, starting at the Top Spur trailhead (3800 ft), we'll intersect the PCT briefly, then the Timberline Trail as we ascend, then onto McNeil Point Trail until we reach the shelter (6000 ft).  We'll have lunch at the shelter, then descend.  Expect spectacular views of Mt Hood at various points and maybe some wildflowers too.  We'll take a slow to moderate pace to enjoy the views.  Total 10.5 miles & 2200 ft elevation gain

  • Oregon Hikers: McNeil Point Hike
  • Also, see All Trails for recent trip reports, but note that we are ending at the shelter and not taking the steep scramble (the All Trails route goes beyond the shelter).  We are taking the route outlined on Oregon Hikers.

Carpool location: Gateway Park & Ride

  • We will meet at Gateway at 06:30 AM, rather early since the parking area is small and it will be a weekend.
  • Round trip mileage from Gateway to Top Spur is about 100 miles.  The suggested gas contribution is 10 cents per mile, or $10 per person, payable to the driver.

Trailhead: Top Spur Trailhead

Parking permit: Northwest Forest Pass

Group size is limited to 12 as part of this hike takes place in a Wilderness area.
