The Elevator Shaft

The Elevator Shaft is an unofficial and unmaintained historic trail that is a direct route up to Multnomah Basin. On this hike, we will scramble up a steep, mossy, brushy, and loose boulder field that rises 1200 ft in just half a mile.

Trails Club of Oregon recently cleared what was previously a challenging half-mile bushwhack on the plateau and also removed the poison oak from the lower trail. I'm eager to see the results of their hard work. Once on the plateau, we will check out Cougar Rock, Nesika Lodge, and Waespe Point. Our return will be via the Franklin Ridge Connector/Franklin Ridge trail to the Larch Mountain Trail. Around 8 miles of hiking, 2500 ft of elevation gain, including some steep scrambling. We'll carpool from the MMC parking lot departing at 7:30 am or you can meet us in front of the Multnomah Falls Lodge at 8:10.
