Activity Notes
This is an overnight trip into the Mount Margaret Backcountry. Coldwater Peak is mostly a hike, but the final approach involves a steep snowfield traverse above St Helens Lake requiring ice axe and crampons.
Starting on Earth Day at the Hummocks trailhead, we'll head up to Coldwater Ridge and ramble the ridgetop, gazing into the MSH crater and enjoying spectacular views all around. We'll set up our tents at the Ridge Camp(no permit needed before May 1st). Be prepared to camp on snow. 5 miles, 1800 ft gain.
On the following day, we'll head up to Coldwater Peak. I expect most of this to be snow travel. We'll return to camp, possibly using a different route, gather up our gear and head out. 11 miles, 2200 gain.
Participants should be comfortable with steep snow travel, and LNT backcountry camping.
