Activity Notes
Join us for a delightful urban hike along the Willamette River. Starting at OMSI, with its iconic submarine and riverfront plaza, we'll head south along the Eastbank Esplanade where the city's industrial past meets its green future. As we move along the river, we'll pass beneath the towering Ross Island Bridge, while across the water Portland's downtown skyline creates a stunning backdrop. The path opens up to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, where we often spot great blue herons and osprey soaring overhead, and the cheerful sounds of the historic Oaks Amusement Park drift across the water. Together we'll cross the elegant Sellwood Bridge to the west side, entering a quieter, more natural stretch through Powers Marine Park, where trees line the shore and small boats bob in the river. The scene transforms as we enter the gleaming South Waterfront district, with its modern glass towers reflecting the afternoon sun. Moving into downtown, Tom McCall Waterfront Park offers us a vibrant slice of Portland life – cherry trees line the path (spectacular in spring), and on weekends the bustling Saturday Market fills the air with music and the scent of street food. Finally, crossing the historic Steel Bridge's lower deck, we'll enjoy magnificent views of the river's boat traffic before returning to OMSI along the floating section of the Eastbank Esplanade, where we're literally walking on the river beneath Portland's signature bridges.
