Going on a street ramble is one of the best ways to get an introduction to the Mazama hiking program. Meet other hikers, maintain your fitness, and explore hidden parts of Portland you might never see otherwise. We have options for a variety of paces and skill levels. Best of all, it's free!
Interested in joining us? All you need to do is show up, check in, and be ready to go at 6 p.m. Make sure you're in proper footwear, dress for the weather, and bring water as well as a headlamp or flashlight.
See you there!
Activity Notes
Please wear sneakers, hiking shoes or other footwear appropriate for hiking on streets and unpaved trails. Closed toe shoes are strongly encouraged. There may be rain or mud so please dress for the weather, and bring layers. Flash light needed (sorry, your phone won't work for this!). A headlight can substitute for your flashlight. Test it at home to be sure it works and has good batteries. No experience necessary and all people are welcome. No dogs or other pets please. You will be hiking on hills, uneven terrain, and potentially slippery trails. Many participants don't use poles but if you are more comfortable using them then please feel free to bring them. You may want to bring a granola bar or other easy to eat hiking snack (optional). We don't stop to eat. A water bottle in small backpack is helpful. A reflective vest is helpful but not required. No need to go buy one if you don't have one. Please show up 15-20 minutes early for an orientation and to be assigned to a group. When you arrive please go into Keen shoes and ask for a free parking pass for their lot. Put it on your car's dashboard then come back inside and find the leader who will help you figure out which group to go with. We usually have several groups, going at different speeds and levels of difficulty, covering between 5 miles and eight miles, in two hours. We hike every Tuesday and Thursday 365 days a year, unless the temperature in Portland is above 95 degrees, or Portland Public schools close for snow/Ice. We do not have a hike on Thanksgiving day or Christmas day. No smoking or vaping on hikes or on Keens property. You don't have to be a Mazama to come, and this event is free.
