Join us for two short films about Oregon's tallest mountain: Cabin in the Sky : In August 1915, Oregon mountaineer and Forest Service ranger Lige Coalman established a fire lookout cabin atop the 11,225-foot summit of Mt. Hood with the intent of creating an early warning system for forest fire detection and suppression. Over time, this high-altitude structure transformed into a versatile space, serving as a wedding chapel, a haven during mountain storms, and a symbolic milestone for climbers commemorating their accomplishments. However, following its abandonment by the Forest Service in 1934, the cabin succumbed to disrepair, and in the 1950s collapsed into a pile of charred timber. This 10-minute documentary delves into the captivating history of the cabin and the remarkable individuals who erected and inhabited this iconic structure perched atop Oregon's loftiest peak. Ranger: Canine Alpinist : Climbing to the summit of Mt. Hood over five hundred times, the Alsatian Shepard Ranger was a favorite of local climbers in the 1920s and 1930s. Watch this 8-minute documentary on the life of this amazing and beloved mountaineer.
